A Bangladesh-born US citizen was allegedly abducted from the capital’s Mohakhali Flyover on Wednesday afternoon.
His nephew Abul Hossain filed a lawsuit with Kafrul police station on the same night.
Police said when the incident occurred, Mofizul Islam – who came to Bangladesh on January 22 – was heading towards his residence in Park Road of Baridhara from Motijheel on his car.
Quoting his driver Imran Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Kafrul police station told the Dhaka Tribune that when Mofizul’s car was on Mohakhali flyover, miscreants on a microbus and a motorbike blocked the car’s path and kidnapped Mofizul.
He said the driver came to the police station following the incident and informed the police. Mofizul’s nephew also came to the station after a while and filed a case, he added.
Seeking anonymity, a police official said that talking to relatives of Mofizul it was found that he had borrowed money from many people in the country. It is also being suspected that he might stage the abduction to go into hiding.
Talking to reporters, Deputy Commissioner of DMP media centre Maruf Hossain Sarder said the DMP and its detective branch are investigating into the matter.
A source said law-enforcement agencies were trying to find out if Mofizul’s driver Imran was involved in the crime or if the incident actually happened.
He is being interrogated to confirm how the incident took place, the source added.
