Three Gazipur cops closed for assaulting nurse

Three members of Gazipur Detective Branch (DB) of police were closed yesterday on charge of assaulting a nurse of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College (STAMC).

The DB police officials are Assistant Sub-Inspector Mushfiqur Rahman, Constable Anwar and Fazlul Hoque.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Harun-ur Rashid closed the DB police officials yesterday morning after visiting the hospital. During the visit, the SP assured of ensuring justice for the victim.

The STAMC authorities said Mushfiqur, Anwar and Fazlul at around 10:30pm on Monday went to the emergency unit of the hospital in search of a suspected criminal named Rana. However, Rana managed to escape the spot sensing the presence of the police.

The DB team blamed the hospital's Senior Nurse Abul Fazal for helping the criminal escape and they started beating him up there mercilessly with sticks. At one stage, they tried to pick Abul Fazal up from his workplace but as the victim's colleagues and physicians intervened they left the spot.

Later, injured Fazal, general secretary of STAMC Diploma Nurse Association, was admitted to the hospital.

Angered by the police atrocity, the hospital's staff immediately brought out a procession and declared a work abstention programme creating immense suffering to the patients.

Finally agitating staff withdrew the programme as the SP said that action had already been taken.

STAMC Residential Medical Officer Abdus Salam confirmed the incidents to the Dhaka Tribune and said: “Normalcy has returned to the hospital after the action and assurance of justice given by the SP.”
