JCD men embezzle money for slain comrade’s family

Local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders in Mymensingh have allegedly misappropriated money given to the family of a slain activist by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The family of former Gafargaon municipal unit JCD general secretary Ibne Azad Komol claimed they were threatened by Chhatra Dal leaders for asking them to return the money.

They wrote to Khaleda on February 8, complaining against the district’s JCD President Rukonuzzaman Rukon and the upazila’s Convenor Mahibur Rahman Nasim.

Komol was killed in August 2014. His father Abul Kalam accused three Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in a murder case.

BNP chief Khaleda met his family at her Gulshan office on November 23, 2014 and put Tk5 lakh in a fixed deposit account for Komol’s wife and gave a Tk3 lakh cheque to them.

But 15 days later, JCD leaders Rukon and Nasim gave Komol’s family only Tk1,40,000. Nasim declined comment and Rukon could not be reached.

Komol’s father said: “When I sought money from Rukon, he told me to contact Nasim. Nasim said, ‘your son is not worth more than that.’ So, we had no choice but to write to Khaleda Zia.”
