Police officials have allegedly inflicted burn injuries to a tea stall owner who refused to pay them extortions in the capital's Mirpur.
Bablu, 45, was the victim of the assault around 9pm yesterday. He owns a tea stall in Mirpur's Gudaraghat area.
Bablu's nephew Jahirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune that several policemen came to his uncle's shop and demanded extortion. When Bablu refused, one of them beat him up with a stick.
At one point of the assault, another policeman kicked a stove in the stall and a hot-water-filled kettle landed on Bablu, causing him severe burns.
The victim was brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit around 11:45pm. Doctors said 95% of his body has suffered burns.
Sentu Chandra Das, assistant sub-inspector at DMCH outpost, said the police station concerned has been notified.
