A five-year-old madrasa student sustained burn injury as teachers dragged him to an earthen oven and tightly held him very close to the burning flames in which he caught fire.
The incident took place at Char Selimpur Qweratul Quran Madrasa located at Batamara union, Muladi upazila, Barisal.
The incident came to the light after father of victim taking him on lap came to Barisal court promises in a bid to take advice from district Awami League Secretary and lawmaker Advocate Talukdar Md Yunus about lodging case against the teachers.
On December 23, last year, Mahin was reluctant to have bath due to severe cold, but the teachers forced him to take bath with cold water. After the bath, he started shivering.
Seeing his condition, some teachers led by Maulana Alamin got furious and dragged him to an earthen oven and tightly held him very close to the burning flames for a few minutes. Then, Mahin’s dress caught fire and a portion of his chest was burnt.
Hearing his screams, neighbouring people rescued Mahin and took him to Gauranadi Upazila Health Complex where he took treatment for several days.
Dr MA Azad Sajal, a physician at burn unit of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said condition of Mahin was severe, but now he was out of danger.
“He needs long-term treatment for full recovery,” said the doctor.
Advocate Talukdar Md Yunus said attempt for an arbitrationt was going on so that the boy would get treatment cost from madrasa authorities.
Maulana Alamin, who has remained absconding since the incident, denied allegation against him over phone. He said it was an accident.
Sub-Inspector of Muladi police station Mizanur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that legal action would be taken after filing of a case.
