A suspected drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” between members of drug smuggling gang and police in Rajendropur area of Gazipur in the early hours of yesterday.
Monir Khan was a resident of Haldoba area, Gazipur sadar upazila.
Sub-Inspector of Joydevpur police station Harun-Ur Rashid said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in Haldoba area of Rajendropur and detained Monir with 100 pieces of yaba tablets around 10:45am on Tuesday.” However, his associates managed to flee the scene. The SI said: “Later, we took Monir along with us and conducted a drive in the same area to catch his associates.”
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the drug peddlers opened fire targeting the police. In retaliation, police fired back that left Monir dead.
