3 JMB men put on 4-day remand

A court in Chittagong yesterday placed three members of banned   outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), who arrested in possession of a huge number of arms and ammunition, on a four-day remand.  

“Naimur Rahman Nayon, Md Shawkat Rasel and Faisal Mahmud were put on a four-day remand in connection with two cases lodged with Bayazid police station after they were produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Nowrin Akhtar Kakon around 3pm”, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Kazi Muttaki Ibn Minan (prosecution).

He said: “The court granted one-day remand in the case filed under Explosive Act and three-day remand in another case filed on charge of attacking police and killing a JMB leader.

On Saturday, another court sent them to jail on completion of a five-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-terrorism Act.

The trio were arrested in possession of firearms in different parts of the port city on December 27 and were shown arrested in the case filed with Karnaphuli police station on October 6. They all were students of physics at Chittagong University but their studentships were suspended by the university authorities for suspected link to militancy. 

After arresting the three, Detective Branch (DB) officials raided a JMB den in the city’s Aman Bazar area and recovered American semiautomatic MK 11 sniper rifle along with 250 rounds, two magazines, 10 detonators, 12 sets of Bangladesh Army uniforms, and some books and other documents.

DB’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Akhtar said Fardin alias Noman, chief of JMB in Chittagong, rented the den five to six months ago, identifying himself as a businessman.
