‘Robber’ killed in B’baria ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and police at Dharanti village in Sarail upazila early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Bashir, 40, a resident of the village.

Tipped off that a group of 10-12 robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there around 3 am, said Ali Arshad, officer-in-charge of Sarail police station.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire at them, prompting the police to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Bashir got bullet-hit as he was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee.

Three policemen were injured during the gunfight.

Police recovered the body of Bashir and sent it to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
