A suspected robber has been killed in a “shootout” with police in the district's Sarail Upazila.
The deceased is Bashir Mia, 30.
Confirming the news, Sarail police station OC Md Ali Arshad said: “One policeman received injuries during the gunfight.”
He said: “A gang of robbers opened fire on a police patrol team in Dharmatirtha area around 3:30am Wednesday. In retaliation, police fired back, leaving Bashir injured.
“He was declared dead after he was taken to the Sadar Hospital. A pipe-gun was recovered from his possession.”
In another incident of “encounter” between suspected robbers and police on Comilla-Sylhet highway in Birasa of the district, five robbers were detained.
They are—Khorshed, Shanu, Billal, Sattar and Bahar. Of them, Khorshed sustained bullet injuries and was admitted to the Sadar Hospital.
Brahmanbaria Sadar police station OC Akul Chandra Biswas said: “A group of robbers were trying to rob a picnic bus at Birasa. Being informed, police reached there around 4am and the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers. When the policemen retaliated, five criminals were injured.”
Akul Chandra along with two other police members-- SI Premdhan Majumder and Constable Kamal-- also received injuries during the gunfight.
