A wanted criminal, also a member of radical Islami Chhatra Shibir, was shot dead when his associates tried to snatch him from the police along with a shotgun during his arrest at Chittagong’s Sitakunda yesterday noon.
Deceased Md Osman, 25, was accused in 17 cases filed with Sitakunda police for sabotage and attack on police, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Tarikul Islam of Sitakunda circle.
A team of Sitakunda police raided the house of Osman in Dakkhin Rahmat Nagar area under the upazila around 2:30pm on a tip off.
“During the arrest, Osman’s family members and associates swooped on the police and tried to snatch him triggering a scuffle,” Officer-in-Charge Iftekhar Hasan told the Dhaka Tribune
“Osman was injured as a bullet was mistakenly fired from a shotgun of the police during the brawl,” he added.
The injured was taken to Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex where the duty physicians declared him dead. The body was sent to Chittagong Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
