HC upholds death sentence in 2009 schoolgirl murder case

The High Court yesterday upheld a trial court verdict that awarded death sentence to one and life imprisonment to four in a 2009 murder of a schoolgirl in the capital.

The HC bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman delivered the verdict rejecting the convict’s appeal and accepting the death reference.

On February 26 2009, Anamika Ghosh, 9, a student of class III, was abducted while she was on her way home from school. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Tk10 lakh from the family but they could not manage the ransom.

On March 1, police recovered her body near the Paturia Ferry Terminal in Manikganj and arrested five suspects on March 7. In December 2009, Fourth Speedy Tribunal of Dhaka found the five guilty of abduction and murder of the schoolgirl. Yesterday, the High Court rejected their appeals against the verdicts and upheld the sentences.
