SC paves way for Tangail MP Rana’s arrest

The Appellate Division of Supreme Court scrapped a High Court order yesterday which instructed law enforcers not to arrest Awami League lawmaker of Tangail 3 Amanur Rahman Khan Rana and his brother Shahidur Rahman Khan in Faruk Ahmed murder case.

A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana passed the order after hearing a leave-to-appeal plea filed by the government against the High Court order.

The Supreme Court order has lifted legal bars to arresting them in the case, said Deputy Attorney General Ekramul Haque Tutul.

In the July 14 order, the High Court had directed Amanur and Shahidur to surrender to a lower court in two weeks after they had moved a petition before the HC, seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

After the HC granted them anticipatory bail, the state moved to the Appellate Division and on July 21 a vacation chamber bench stayed the HC order. The petition filed by the state was then sent to a regular SC bench.

Criminals shot freedom fighter Faruk, also a district Awami League leader, to death on January 18, 2013 in front of his house at College Para in Tangail. The next day his wife filed a case accusing unknown criminals.

Later, she claimed that four brothers of the Khan family were involved with the murder. Police arrested Anisul Islam Raja and Mohammad Ali who are known as close associates of the Tangail 3 lawmaker and his brothers. They confessed that Amanur and his three brothers were involved with the murder.

Fearing arrest or harassment, Amanur and Shahidur in July this year moved the petition before the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

Rana’s brothers – Shahidur Rahman Khan is the mayor of Tangail municipality and general secretary of Tangail city Awami League, Jahidur Rahman Khan is the president of Tangail Chamber of Commerce and Saniyat Khan Bappa is a leader of Chhatra League.
