8 Jubo League men held over attack on Hindus

Law enforcers yesterday arrested eight Jubo League members including two FIR-listed accused in connection with the attack on Hindu people that killed an unborn baby in sadar upazila on Wednesday.

A Feni district court sent them to jail after they were produced before it at noon.

Feni model police Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Morshed said they were yet to arrest Samrat and Iqbal – two prime accused in the case. 17 named and 8-10 unnamed persons were made accused in the case.

According to locals and eyewitnesses, led by Samrat and Iqbal, the attack was carried out on Wednesday night after the Hindus of Matiara fishermen’s village under Panchgachhia of sadar upazila used firecrackers during the Lakshmi Puja celebrations. At least 20 villagers were injured in the attack.

They also kicked seven months pregnant Tulshi Rani on her abdomen as she tried to save her husband from the rowdy attackers. She gave birth to a dead baby on the spot amid severe bleeding. She is now undergoing treatment at Feni Sadar Hospital.

District Jonmashtomi Parishad General Secretary Roshik Shekhar said some identified goons affiliated with the ruling party made the attack. The villagers would have been saved had the police acted promptly.

UP Member Taju said the attackers were AL cadres but hold no position in Jubo League.
