A man severed ears of his wife in Dalpa village of Comilla on Thursday night after his demand for dowry was not met.
Quoting locals, police said Jalal Uddin, son of Kamal Munshi, had married Tanzina Akter, daughter of Motaleb Hossain, five years back. Since the beginning of their marriage, Jalal and his family members have been torturing Tanzina for dowry.
On Thursday, an altercation took place between Tanzina and her in-laws over the issue.
At one stage, Jalal tied her with rope and cut her ears with a knife.
Hearing her cry, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued her in a critical condition. They also caught Jalal and handed him over to the police.
But his family members managed to flee the scene.
Tanzina is now undergoing treatment at Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Muradnagar police station Mujibur Rahman said a case had been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. He also said they were conducting drives to arrest the in-laws of Tanzina.
