Miscreants have stabbed to death an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Darus Salam police station in the city’s Gabtali area yesterday.
The victim was 40-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector Ibrahim Hossain Mollah.
Police said Ibrahim was on duty at a check-post set up near Parbat Cinema Hall of Gabtali in the evening.
When three suspicious-looking pedestrians were passing the check-post around 8:40pm, on-duty policemen signaled them to stop, Inspector (Investigation) Faruqul Alam told UNB.
As Ibrahim was going to check a bag being carried by them, one of the men stabbed him and ran away with the bag.
Other policemen chased and caught one suspect, who said his name was Masudur Rahman. But DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Muntasirul Islam said the suspect’s identity was now being verified.
Police, however, could not give any detail about what was in the bag. A police source said the perpetrators might have been from Bogra.
Rahat Nazma, on-duty doctor at Suhrawardy Hospital, said Ibrahim was already dead when he was brought there around 9:30pm. He had two stab wounds on his chest and abdomen.
