Alleged robber shot in Jessore

A suspected robber, who received bullet-wound, has been arrested in Jessore's Monirampur upazila on Tuesday.

Police claimed that they found wounded Akbar Ali in the upazila's Chalkidanga area and arrested him immediately. Later, he was admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital.

Police also claimed that a pipe-gun was recovered from his possession. However, Akbar refuted the claim saying he was not a robber. "Police shot me after they picked me up."

Locals said Akbar was detained in front of many people at Rajganj Bazar on Monday evening. Police blindfolded and tortured him at night and shot in his leg, claimed locals.

ASP Shafin Mahmud said acting on a tip-off, they raided the Sardar nursery in Chalkidanga on Monday night while a gang of robbers were preparing for robbery.

"Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers attacked us. Later, they retreated in face of police firing," added the official. "All criminals managed to flee the scene. But, we found bullet-wound Akbar."
