Man gets death for killing wife

A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for not paying dowry.

Judge Jaishree Samadder of Special Tribunal 3 for Women and Children Repression Prevention issued the verdict yesterday in presence of the convict, Md Amirul Islam Emon, 28, from Natore.

“The tribunal’s judgement is that killing is a heinous crime, so the accused should given the capital punishment,” the verdict said.

The convict was also fined Tk10,000.

Hearing the verdict, convict Emon burst into tears it the court room.

The tribunal acquitted another accused named Shourav as the prosecution could not prove any allegation against him.

There is another accused who has been absconding since the beginning of the trial.

According to the case statement, Emon Aminul got married with victim Ayesha Siddique in 2001. Both were RMG workers then and were employed at Saleha Garments in the capital’s Mirpur area.

Shortly after getting married, the couple had a son. Soon after his son’s birth, Emon demanded Tk20,000 in dowry from Ayesha.

On November 15, 2004, Emon strangled Ayesha to death with a nylon rope and fled their house, leaving Ayesha’s body behind.

Ayesha’s father Md Abu Bakar Siddique filed a case with Pallabi police station the next day, under the Women and Children Repression Act 2000. Police arrested Emon on November 18, 2004 at his aunt’s house in Natore.

Later, Emon confessed to killing Ayesha when he was presented before the court.

Sub-Inspector Md Abdul Khaleque, investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against the accused to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on April 7, 2005.

The court started trial against him after framing charges in the case on July 10, 2006.
