The convict - Md Sohel, 42, was sentenced to two years of imprisonment by a mobile court.
The jail and hospital sources informed that Sohel was taken to DMCH on Monday evening around 5pm from central jail for a urinary tract infection and was admitted in ward No 217.
After his treatment ended, Sohel was given the release order from DMCH on Tuesday noon.
Two jail guards – Azizul Hakim and Nazrul Manik – were on duty to escort Sohel during his transfer, when the convict requested to relieve himself around 1:30pm.
The guards escorted Sohel, who was handcuffed, to a nearby toilet and stood guard outside.
The guards grew alarmed when Sohel did not come out after quite some time. They went inside to check and found that Sohel had made his escape from the toilet.
Sohel was scheduled to be returned to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj after his medical treatment.
Bangladesh Jail Authority took action immediately by suspending the two guards for negligence on duty.
Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Md Towhidul Islam informed Dhaka Tribune that a case has been filed regarding Sohel’s escape with Shahbagh police station.
DIG Towhidul said: “The guards who were supposed to escort the convict back to jail have neglected their duties and have acted irresponsibly”.
He also confirmed that an investigation regarding the incident is underway and action will be taken against the duo within next 15 working days.
