Two held over AL leader Omar Faruk murder

Two people, including a Jubo League leader, were arrested from Latifpur area in Sadar upazila early yesterday in connection with the killing of Chandraganj union unit Awami League leader Omar Faruk.

Superintendent of police Shah Mijan Safiur Rahman said on a tip-off,  a team of police conducted a drive at night in the area and arrested Ismael Hossain, former joint convener of Chandraganj union unit Jubo League and Nurul Islam.

The police detained them for interrogation in connection with the AL leader murder, the SP added.

Omar Faruk, vice-president of Chandraganj union unit of Awami League and son of late Abdul Mannan of West Latifpur village in Sadar upazila, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Chandraganj thana on Tuesday morning.

Quoting witnesses, police said a group of 4-5 miscreants in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw swooped on Omar while he was taking tea at a tea shop in Mostafa Shop area around 9:30am.

The attackers opened fire on the Awami League leader, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he died on way to Noakhali General Hospital.
