Locals demand punishment to magistrate family

Locals protested yesterday tortured on Bithi, a domestic help in the house of Magistrate Nurul Islam in the district, who was repressed brutally by the inmates on August 19.

In the morning, under the banner of Sachetan Nagorik Somaj, the local people organised a protest rally in front of the Satkhira Court.

Among others, the programme was addressed by local Awami League leader Md Nazrul Islam, Saiful Karim Safu, journalist Kallayan Banerjee, Kohinoor Islam and Mostafizur Rahamn. They demanded exemplary punishment of the culprits.

According to sources, police rescued the 10-year-old ‘tortured’ domestic help from the rented house of Judicial Magistrate Nurul Islam on the day.

Later, she was admitted to Sadar Hospital with injury marks at different parts of her body.

Locals said they spotted the girl crying for water from the balcony of the rented house of the Judicial Magistrate around 1pm and informed police. As the police went to the spot, the inmates of the house did not allow them in.

When the information spread around, Chief Judicial Magistrate Nitai Chandra Shaha, Judicial Magistrate-1 Shimul Kumar Biswas, assistant superintendent of police (Sadar circle) Anwar Syed and other high officials of the administration appeared at the spot. The house inmates then opened the door.

As the minor girl was rescued from the house, she bore many marks of burn injuries and beating. However, the girl denied that she was tortured and even was reluctant to show the injury marks.

Neighbours alleged that Nurul Islam and his wife Natasha used to torture the girl in their house.

ASP Md Anwar Sayed said although police rushed to the spot as soon as they received the information from the locals, the residents of the house opened the door about one and a half hours later.

He also acknowledged that the rescued girl bore many marks of injuries in her body.
