Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) members have detained a betel nut trader with 270 kilograms of sulfur, which is used for making explosives, from Chittagong's Uttar Sikalbaha union.
Acting on a tip-off, the law enforcers picked Omar Faruk up from his factory around 2pm Monday, said RAB 7 Assistant Director ASP Sohel Mahmud.
RAB 7 Chandgaon Camp's Company Commender Major Md Jahangir Alam, in a press briefing in around 5:30pm, said: “We found 270 kilograms of Sulfur from Faruk’s rented house in Billapara area. With the seized explosives, remarkable number of bombs can be made.
“Local betel nut traders use sulfur for processing their products. But, none can preserve the chemical without any document. Faruk could not show any paper in this regard.”
In primary interrogation, RAB-7 personnel also found involvement of two other persons – Habibur Rahman, 30, and Bappi, 30 – with the Sulfur preservation, said the RAB official. “They are yet to be captured. Further investigation is underway.”
A case has been lodged with Karnafuli police station in this connection, added the Major. “The arrestee will be handed over to police.”
