Man killed in Dhaka gunfight

A man was killed in what police said a gun battle between them and robbers at south Keraniganj in the capital early yesterday.

The deceased, Md Yusuf, 35, hailed from Bigha village in Dhaka’s Dohar.

Two others – Ismail and Sohrab – were arrested while fleeing the scene. Police claimed that the trio were members of an inter-district robbery gang. Ismail hails from Matwali village in Shariatpur while 30-year-old Sohrab’s village home is in Madaripur.

South Keraniganj OC Monirul Islam said that the gunfight had taken place in Par Gendaria’s Shatpakhi area around 1:45am.

“A team of police raided the spot on a tip-off that a gang of 9-10 robbers were preparing to commit a robbery, but the criminals fired at the police team, triggering a gun battle.

“Yusuf sustained bullet injuries when shots were fired from both sides. Doctors pronounced him dead after he was taken to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital around 3am,” the OC said. All the three were facing several cases filed over murder and robbery.

Monirul said that locals had arrived on the spot after hearing gunshots and helped the police capture Ismail and Sohrab. A pistol, two rounds of bullets and some local weapons were recovered from their possessions.

He claimed that five police members had been injured in the shootout and given first aid at a hospital.
