A Chittagong court yesterday granted bail to former Chittagong Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and 15 others in a corruption case filed over allocating shops of Chittagong City Corporation.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Md Ruhul Amin passed the order. The court fixed September 22 for the hearing of another under-trial case against Mohiuddin which was lodged for discrepancies in his wealth statement.
Defence counsel Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury said Mohiuddin, also the president of the Awami League Chittagong unit, and others surrendered before the court yesterday.
“Mohiuddin pleaded for permanent bail showing physical weakness, and the court accepted his plea,” he said.
According to documents of the graft case, Mohiuddin – while he was mayor in 1997 – allegedly allocated 29 shops at Muradpur Bus Station by misusing power and intending to earn money illegally.
