A suspected criminal has been killed and two police sub inspectors have been injured in a “shootout” between policemen and criminals at Kafrul in the capital on Sunday midnight.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 30, chief of Salam Bahini, reports BSS.
The injured police officers are sub inspectors Zahir Raihan of pallabi police station and Kamrul Islam of Kafrul police station.
Salam was wanted in 33 criminal cases including murder, extortion, rape, arms, and explosives with different police stations.
On a tip-off a gang of criminals assembled at Baistaki area under Kafrul police station, a joint team of Mirpur, Karul and Pallabi police rushed to the place of occurrence around 11.30pm, said assistant commissioner (AC) Zakir Hossain of Pallabi zone.
As soon as police reached the spot, the criminals fired indiscriminate bullets on them forcing them to fire back triggering a brief gunfight, he said, adding that two police sub inspectors suffered bullet wounds on hands and legs.
Salam also suffered critical bullet wounds by firing of gunshots of his accomplices while others managed to escape, he also said.
Police recovered a foreign made pistol and several rounds of bullet from his possession, the police official said.
He was declared dead by the physicians soon after his admission to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).
The injured police officers were first rushed to DMCH from where they were shifted to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital.
Police later arrested Salam's second wife Rubi, 24, from his Mirpur residence and seized one foreign made pistol, 205 puria of heroin and 100 contraband yaba tablets from her purse.
Five separate cases--two under arms act, one each for attacking police, drug trading, and taking preparation for committing robbery - were filed with the respective police station.
