The ballistic report of the gun belonging to an MP’s son proves that the weapon was used to shoot the bullets found in the bodies of those killed in a shooting spree at New Eskaton.
DMP Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam made the disclosure at a press briefing in the DMP media centre yesterday, adding that they received the report on Thursday afternoon.
“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) confirmed that the calibres of the bullets found in the bodies and those of Rony’s 7.65 calibre pistol – were the same.”
The DMP official said the investigation into the case was almost finished, adding that the police would now appeal to the court to bring the accused, Bakhtiar Alam Roni, under remand and try to extract a confessional statement from him.
On the night of April 13, Rony, son of Awami League reserved seat lawmaker and Awami Mahila League leader Pinu Khan, allegedly opened fire from inside his SUV in an intoxicated state and killed two men – autorickshaw driver Yakub Sikder and rickshaw puller Abdul Halim.
Replying to a query on how the police would conclusively prove that it was Rony who fired the shot, Monirul said they had enough evidence to prove that it was Rony who pulled the trigger that night.
Earlier, Tiger Kamal and Md Jahangir Hossain, two of Rony’s friends who were reportedly in the car when the shooting took place, gave statements to a Dhaka court admitting that Rony had fired the fatal shots. Kamal Mahmood, another friend of Rony, also gave judicial statement in the case on Wednesday.
Monirul, the spokesperson for the DMP, said both of Rony’s friends as well as a suspect in the case – Rony’s driver Imran Fakir – had given similar account of what had occurred that night. Jahangir, in his statement, described details that put the events into a context, the DMP official said.
Following the incident, Monowara Begum – mother of deceased Halim – filed a murder case with Ramna police station on April 15; it was later shifted to the Detective Branch on May 24.
Rony was arrested from his Elephant Road residence on May 31. Following a round of remand earlier this month, the MP’s son currently remains behind bars.
