A housewife has allegedly been tortured to death by her husband in Jessore.
Victim Selina Parvin, 35, died on Wednesday night in Jessore General Hospital, said OC Mahmud Hossain of Jessore Kotwali police.
Police arrested her husband Shafiullah Mithu.
The victim's brother, Sardar Firoz Ahmed, said Selina was married to Shafiullah Mithu, son of Alek Sheikh, of the Maijpara-Hossainpur area of Narail, 13 years ago.
Mithu had always been pressurising Selina and her family for dowry since the marriage.
Her family gave Mithu Tk3 lakh as dowry when he went to Malaysia five years ago.
He recently returned from Malaysia and bought three-four bighas of land.
Then he started pressurising Selina for another Tk1 lakh, the money required for the land registry.
In demand of the money, he has been torturing Selina regularly.
Last Wednesday Mithu beat Selina mercilessly.
Later she was taken to Narail hospital in critical condition and then referred to Jessore General Hospital where she died at 10pm.
OC Mahmud Hossain of Jessore Kotwali police said Mithu was arrested for interrogation at the same night upon receiving an allegation from Selina's relatives.
Selina Parvin is daughter of the freedom fighter Jinnat Ali of Sultanpur area in Chaugachha upazila of Jessore.
Parvin worked at Chaugachha Upazila Health Complex. She went to her in-laws house a month back in Narail when her husband came back home from abroad.
