Detectives will produce Bakhtiar Alam Roni, a lawmaker’s son who has been accused of murdering two people, before a court today at the end of a four-day remand.
Police sources, however, said there was no plan at the moment to request a fresh round of remand to further interrogate Bakhtiar, whose mother Pinu Khan holds a women’s reserved seat in parliament and is the central committee general secretary of the Mahila Awami League.
“We have sufficient evidence against Bakhtiar to prove that he was the killer,” said DB Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das, the investigation officer of the case.
Meanwhile, a DB investigator said Bakhtiar was a drug addict and had been acting frantically during his remand, which has put detectives in a dilemma regarding the consequences if something untoward were to happen during questioning.
Seeking anonymity, the investigator added that they have collected sufficient evidence and were now waiting for the CID’s ballistic report on the pistol that was seized from Bakhtiar.
DB officials said they were now trying to catch three other Juba League and Chhatra League men who were inside the car with Bakhtiar when he shot dead an autorickshaw driver and a rickshaw-puller on April 14, reportedly in an intoxicated state.
“We would like to know whether they had conducted any prior crimes with the pistol before the killing took place,” said SI Dipak.
