A union-level leader of Swechchhasebak League has been hacked to death by his nephew in the district's Mehendiganj upazila.
The deceased is Idris Majhi, 31, joint secretary of Char Ekkoria union unit Swechchhasebak League.
Quoting family members, police said Iqbal Haoladar, the nephew of the victim, entered Idris's house around 5:30am on Friday, making an excuse of charging the battery of a mobile phone set.
At one stage of their conversation, Iqbal hacked Idris and fled the scene around 6am.
The critically injured Idris was taken to the upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead, said Ramkrishna Devnath, convener of upazila unit Swechchhasebak League.
When contacted, Ujjal Kumar Dey, OC Mehendiganj police station said: “Iqbal might have killed Idris over a land dispute.
“The investigation is underway and the police are trying to capture the killer.”
