Bakhtiar Alam Rony, son of a ruling party lawmaker, during remand has admitted that he shot at people in the Dilu Road area on April 13 under the influence of alcohol.
Rony, however, claimed he had no idea about the death of two persons in the shooting, officials of Detective Branch of police dealing with the case said yesterday.
Son of lawmaker Pinu Khan, also general secretary of Mahila Awami League, Rony was interrogated in DB custody for the third day yesterday.
The accused admitted that he had fired four to five rounds of bullets from his car and left the place, Sub-Inspector Dipak Kumar Das, investigation officer of the case, told reporters. Rony was seated next to the driver.
Rony, 42, claimed he had been angered seeing a traffic gridlock at Dilu Road at around 2am. Earlier he attended a function at Sonargaon Hotel until 1:30am and then dropped one of his friends in the Moghbazar area. “I did not know that the bullets killed two people,” he claimed.
Police arrested Rony on May 29 upon information given by his driver Imran Fakir, he said.
Yakub Sikder, driver of a CNG-run auto-rickshaw of the daily Janakantha, and Abdul Halim, a rickshaw-puller, received bullet injuries. Halim died on the spot while Yakub succumbed to injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Halim’s mother Monowara Begum filed a murder case with Ramna police. The case was later shifted to the DB police.
A Dhaka court on June 1 granted the DB police four days to interrogate Rony. As he pretended to be sick, the law enforcers first took him to Rajarbagh Police Lines Hospital on the first day of the remand, the IO said.
He was taken to the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, and later to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. The interrogation began on Tuesday.
“There were three more persons in Rony’s black Prado that night. We are trying to find and detain them,” IO Dipak said.
