A court yesterday sentenced a student of Barisal University (BU) to death for killing a female fellow classmate.
The condemned convict is Russel Mia, a student of Management department.
According to the prosecution, Sawda, the female student ,who came for higher studies at Accounting department of the university from the remote coastal area of Patharghata of Barguna district was hacked on September 4, 2013 by management department male student Russell of the upazila over breaking up of love their affairs.
She was rushed to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and from where she was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). She succumbed to her injuries on September 5 at DMCH.
The university authorities expelled Russel following the incident.
The victim’s mother Saheda Begum filed a murder case in this connection.
Police arrested Russell from Chittagong Port area on September 12.
Inspector Shakhawat Hossain, investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against Russell on April 30, 2014.
Md Anwarul Huq, district and session judge handed down the verdict after examining confessional statement of the killer.
