3 kidnappers give confessional statements

Three members of a kidnapping gang have placed confessional statements before a Dhaka court on Monday in connection with Abir's abduction.

The three accused are Mizanur Rahman, mastermind of the gang, Rezaul Karim, a driver of TNZ group of companies, and Nazrul Islam, an electrician of the same company.

They gave the confessional statements before three magistrates separately under section 164 of the code of criminal procedure (CrPC), admitting to their involvement in the abduction.

Three Dhaka metropolitan magistrates – Maruf Hossain, Shariar Mahmud Adnan and Asaduzzman Nur – recorded the statements of the accused in the case.

Officer-in-Charge (investigation) Kabir Hossain Hawladar of Cantonment police station, also investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced the accused before the magistrates with a plea to record their statements.

After recording their statements, the magistrates sent them to jail.

Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakraborty granted six days remand for two other accused for interrogation in the same case.

The two remanded are Jahir Uddin Babar and Shah Md Alauddin.

Earlier on Sunday, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the five accused with a huge amount of ransom money from the capital’s Uttara area.

According to the case documents, the accused abducted a minor boy named Abir on May 2 and released him after enclosing Tk2 crore as ransom from his family on May 6.

Acting on the allegation filed by Abir’s father Sahadat Hossain Shamim, managing director of TNZ Company, a team of RAB arrested the five kidnappers from Kasaibazar in the Uttara area.

During the drive, the lawmen also seized Tk 1.80 crore in cash and some cheque books from their possession.

RAB sources said: “One year ago, Mizan and his associates planned to steal money from TNZ Company. But they later changed the plan and abducted Abir.”

“According to the plan, they kidnapped Abir from the Banani flyover on May 2, intercepting a private car carrying Abir and two others,” the RAB sources said.

“Soon after the kidnapping, they demanded Tk10 crore from Sahadat. But they later agreed to free Abir in exchange for Tk2 crore. After getting the ransom, Mizan handed over Abir to his father near the Banani flyover on the night of May 6,” RAB also said.
