Greed drove Rozi to kill co-wife

The killing of a Chittagong woman on Thursday was a premeditated act carried out by her co-wife, police said after conducting a preliminary interrogation of the prime suspect.

Greed drove Rozi Akhter to murder her polygamist husband’s other wife, Sharmin, with help from her two brothers, police yesterday said.

During interrogation, Rozi confessed to killing Sharmin around midday Thursday over their husband’s property.

The prime suspect had earlier requested her husband to allow her co-wife to live at the flat with her family.

Panchlaish police station Sub-Inspector Oliuddin Akbar, the investigating officer of the case, said Rozi’s brothers Shafi and Shahidul helped in the murder.

The other residents of the flat were sent out on various errands ahead of the killing, he said.

The victim’s mother Shamsun Nahar lodged a murder case with Panchlaish police station on Thursday night accusing Rozi, Shafi, Shahidul and several unidentified people, he said.

On Thursday, around 1pm, Sharmin, 25, second wife of Abu Dhabi resident Abdul Hakim, was killed by co-wife Rozi in her flat at Equity Village in the city’s Mirzarpul area.

The victim’s family and police sources said Sharmin came to live in the flat where Rozi, her three daughters, domestic help Nazmin and cousin Md Ali reside, about a week ago.

Sharmin’s uncle, Mohammad Azim, alleged that Rozi intentionally killed his niece because she wanted to be the sole beneficiary of their husband’s wealth.

Sharmin and Abdul Hakim were married two years ago have a one-year-old son named Ahmad.

In police interrogation, Rozi said she sent her daughters, cousin Ali and chauffeur Anis to a cousin’s residence in the city’s Kalamia Bazar and gave the domestic help the day off.

She and her two brothers then killed Sharmin in the flat, the investigating officer of the case said.

“The arrestees will be produced before court and remand will be sought,” he said.

Police initially arrested five people, including Rozi, in connection with the killing.

Shafi was arrested later and Shahidul remains on the run, Panchlaish police station Officer-in-Charge Mohiuddin Mahmud said.
