Police have detained a man in connection with the Mirpur double murder that took place on Wednesday afternoon.
The detainee is Shahin, a business partner of Sweety Khatun, who was hacked to death along with her uncle-in-law in her residence at the Pallabi area of Mirpur.
Sweety Khatun was the chairman of a business initiative named Independent Power Ltd. while Shahin is a business partner of the initiative.
He was detained for interrogation on whether there was any dispute over their business partnership, DMP Deputy Commissioner Nijarul Arif told reporters in a press briefing at around 7.15pm.
Sweety Khatun and her husband's maternal uncle Amirul Islam were hacked to death at their residence, Pallabi Zone Assistant Commissioner Kamal Hossain earlier told the Dhaka Tribune.
He said two persons on Wednesday afternoon pressed the calling bell at a room of the fourth floor at House No 25, Road No 6 in Mirpur where the victims resided..
When Sweety opened the door, they started hacking at her. After hearing the screams, her maternal father-in-law, who was inside the room, ran to her, but then the intruders also hacked at him, the police official said.
The miscreants left the house, leaving them dead on the spot, he added.
The reasons behind the killings, however, are not known yet, said Kamal.
