Ex-MP among 8 given life terms in Dr Akram murder case

Khulna Divisional Speedy Tribunal Judge MA Rob Hawlader handed down the verdicts at noon on Thursday. He also fined them Tk10,000 each and in case of default, they will each have to serve one year more in jail. Dr Akram Ali was gunned down on the night of August 13, 2016, after he had infuriated a local gang by refusing to pay the extortion money they demanded on the house he had built in the Nawapara area of Avoynagar uapzila. His brother Dr Ashraf Ali filed a case with Avoynagar police station and in 2008 the CID submitted the charge sheet accusing 14 people. The other seven convicts are: Sayed Ali; Sheikh Asadullah alias Asad; Nazrul Islam Mallik; Golam Masud Bachhu alias GM Bachhu; Habibur Rahman alias Habib; Kazi Golam Haider alias Dablu Kazi; and Usha Mollah alias Mama Usha. Of them, Usha Mollah absconded after the murder. The court acquitted four people from the murder charge brought in the case.
