Appeal hearing in Ershad graft case to start 15 Nov

The case was filed in January 1991 with Cantonment police station in the capital on allegations that Ershad - forced from office the previous month - had misappropriated Tk1.91cr and misused his power as the president. Ershad was sentenced to three years' imprisonment by a Dhaka court in February 1992. He moved with the High Court against the verdict and the conviction was stayed that year.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) became a party of the case in 2012. Two years later, the appeal hearing started at the High Court but the matter was stalled. After hearing a plea by the ACC to revive the hearing, the HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus has now fixed the appeal date for a fortnight. Now aged 86, Ershad held the country's highest office for seven years until resigning amid popular protests against his military government in December 1990.
