A Dhaka court has shown former Brahmanbaria-5 Member of Parliament (MP) Faizur Rahman Badal arrested in a case filed over the attempted murder of student activist Masud Hossain during the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
The court also rejected his bail petition and ordered him sent to jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam passed the order following an application filed by the case's investigation officer, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Mominul Islam on Monday.
SI Mizanur Rahman of the court's prosecution division confirmed the matter.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Khandaker Ahsan Habib opposed the application to show Badal arrested and sought bail for his client. However, the court rejected the bail petition after hearing both sides and ordered him detained in jail.
According to the case documents, Masud Hossain came under attack on July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement near the slope of Bosila Bridge and in front of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) office in Mohammadpur.
The attackers allegedly used locally made weapons, pistols, shotguns, petrol bombs and crude bombs, opening fire indiscriminately and leaving Masud seriously injured.
He was subsequently admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where he underwent major surgery on his chest. After a prolonged period of treatment and recovery, he filed the attempted murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station.
The case statement alleges that the attack and shooting targeting the protesters were carried out at the instigation, with financial backing and under the direct orders of the accused named in the complaint.
The investigation officer later sought an order to show Badal arrested in the case. Following the hearing, the court granted the application.
