The Detective Branch (DB) of police has sought a seven-day remand for retired army major Abdul Hafiz in a case filed under the sedition, Anti-Terrorism and Cyber Security Acts with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.

Inspector Sheikh Bashir Ahmed of the DB's Cyber and Special Crime (South) Division, who is investigating the case, filed the remand petition on Sunday.

SI Abu Bakar Siddique of the prosecution division confirmed the matter, saying the remand hearing would be held at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan.

DB police arrested Abdul Hafiz from the capital's Banani area late Saturday night.

Two other accused in the case, retired Lieutenant Colonel Debashish Kumar Barua and Lieutenant Gulshan Ara, have also been arrested and are currently in jail.

According to the case statement, the accused allegedly maintained links with anti-government WhatsApp groups named “Bangladesh Awami League Supporters Alpha” and “BBM Transparency” while operating from their respective residences.
