Tahsif's female friend placed on 4-day remand in murder case

A Dhaka court has placed a female friend of former Air Force official Tahsif Souri on a four-day police remand in a murder case filed over his death.

Inspector Md Firoz Uddin, the investigation officer of the case filed with Uttara East Police Station, sought a seven-day remand to question her.

Following the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain granted a four-day remand.

In the remand petition, the investigation officer said she was suspected of being involved in the incident.

State prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favour of the remand, saying investigators needed to cross-check her statements against information provided by another accused, Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, who is already on remand.

He sought the maximum remand period in the interest of a proper investigation.

Defence lawyer Imam Hossain Javed opposed the remand and sought bail, arguing that she had no involvement in the killing.

He said Dip was the main accused named in the case and that Tahsif Souri’s female friend had been arrested solely on the basis of CCTV footage. According to the lawyer, Souri had dropped her off at her home in his car around midnight that night, after which they had no further contact.

He added that the two had gone to a restaurant for a meal because of their relationship, and that she knew nothing beyond that.

Tahsif's female friend was arrested from the Kafrul area around 2am on Sunday.

Earlier, on Saturday, another accused in the case, Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, described as a younger friend of Souri, was placed on a four-day remand for questioning.

Souri’s father, KM Enayetul Karim, filed the murder case with Uttarkhan Police Station on Friday night after his son’s body was recovered.

Souri, who came into the spotlight as the person who recorded the video of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, was found floating in the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat on Wednesday afternoon. Naval police recovered his body.

He had left his home on his motorcycle on Tuesday evening after Dip called him downstairs.

Dip told reporters on Thursday that he had parted ways with Souri in the Uttara House Building area after they had dinner together at a restaurant.

That night, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) took Dip into custody for questioning from his home on Babar Road in Mohammadpur.

Based on information provided by Dip, investigators recovered Souri’s motorcycle on Friday morning.

Dip also admitted to going with Souri to the area, which is known as a drug hotspot, late that night. PBI officials later took him to the area on Friday as part of the investigation.
