A Dhaka court has granted bail to a 17-year-old boy arrested in a case filed under the Road Transport Act, 2018, over the death of construction worker Mehedi Hasan Mim in a car accident in Baridhara, Dhaka.
On Thursday, Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 Judge Md Abdul Moktadir granted the boy bail on a Tk2,000 bond following a hearing.
Public prosecutor Mohammad Sharif Uddin Mamun confirmed the development, saying the boy’s lawyers sought bail on Thursday, while the prosecution opposed the petition. The court granted bail after hearing both sides.
The boy was arrested in Gulshan on September 23. The following day, the same tribunal ordered that he be sent to a Juvenile Development Centre. The court had rejected his bail petition after a hearing that day.
On September 22, around 5pm, a speeding private car lost control and ran over 24-year-old Mehedi Hasan Mim while he was resting on the footpath on Road 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.
He was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
People at the scene detained the teenager, who was behind the wheel, and handed him over to police. However, he was released into his uncle’s custody later that night after questioning.
Mehedi’s brother, Moktadir Islam, filed a case with Gulshan police station on September 23 over his death. The case named driver Akash as an accused but did not mention the teenager who had been driving the car.
Following criticism over the omission, Gulshan police took the teenager into custody on September 23.
