A Dhaka court has ordered former law minister Anisul Huq and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak to be shown arrested in an attempted murder case over the shooting of a driver during the July uprising in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order on Sunday, state prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the matter.
On September 30, the case’s investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station, filed an application seeking to show the two former ministers arrested in the case. The court scheduled a hearing for Sunday.
During the hearing, State prosecutor Sumon argued in favour of the application, while defence lawyers, including Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, opposed it.
After hearing both sides, the court granted the application and ordered that the two be sent to jail.
According to the case statement, on July 18, 2024, Mamun and several others joined a procession on the flyover in front of Jatrabari Police Station during the July uprising. Gunfire was allegedly opened at the protesters, leaving Mamun with bullet wounds to different parts of his body.
He received treatment at several hospitals before filing the case with Jatrabari Police Station on January 21, 2025, after recovering.
