Malaysian national jailed after remand in 4.5kg gold case

A Malaysian national arrested with 4.5kg of gold worth nearly Tk8 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka has been sent to jail after a six-day remand.

On Sunday, investigation officer SI Mahbub Hossain of Airport Police Station produced Yang Don Seow, 43, before the court and sought an order to send him to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order to send him jail following the petition.

SI Abu Bakar Siddique of the prosecution division confirmed the matter, adding that the accused had not sought bail.

The court had placed him on a six-day remand last Monday.

He was arrested around 4:00am on October 4 after customs officials recovered nine gold bars weighing a total of 4.5kg from him. The gold was valued at approximately Tk7.95 crore, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

The NBR said Yang arrived in Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH0196. Customs officials monitored him after the flight landed and searched him as he passed through Green Channel-1 after collecting his baggage.

The recovered gold comprised four bars weighing 1kg each and five weighing 100g each. The 24-carat gold bars were concealed under his shirt in a black cloth belt.

Assistant Revenue Officer Moniruzzaman of the Dhaka Customs House's Customs Preventive unit filed a case against him under the Special Powers Act at Airport Police Station on Sunday.
