A Dhaka court has placed three people, including a retired police inspector, on a two-day remand in a case over allegedly demanding Tk10 lakh in extortion from a gold shop in Tantibazar while posing as Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Jonaid passed the order on Sunday following a petition by the investigation officer.
SI Kamal Uddin of the police prosecution division confirmed the matter.
The accused are retired inspector SM Mostak Ahmed, 65, Constable Md Hasan Sheikh, 38, who is currently serving in the CID, and Md Abul Kalam Azad, 52.
According to the case statement, the accused forcibly entered the Arshibad gold shop in Dhaka's Tantibazar area under Kotwali Police Station on October 6.
They allegedly threatened Liton Deb's brother and son while posing as CID officials and demanded Tk10 lakh. They also threatened to abduct them if they failed to pay, the complaint said.
After being informed of the incident, a team from the Detective Branch's Kotwali zonal unit, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Enayet Kabir Shoaeb, rushed to the spot and detained the three men.
Police seized a grey CID jacket, a pair of handcuffs, a police field cap, a stamped identity card and other items from their possession.
Liton Deb later filed a case with Kotwali police station.
After the case was filed, the three were formally shown arrested on Wednesday, and the investigation officer, SI Md Ejazul Haque of Kotwali police station, sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. The court sent them to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Sunday.
During Sunday's hearing, the accused were produced before the court. Defence lawyer Advocate Abul Kalam Azad sought the cancellation of the remand petition and bail for his clients, while prosecution SI Kamal Uddin argued in favour of remand.
After hearing both sides, the court granted two days of remand for the three accused.
