Three siblings sentenced to death, 10 others get life for killing Mymensingh farmer

A Mymensingh court on Wednesday sentenced three siblings to death and 10 others to life imprisonment for killing a farmer over a land dispute in 2015.

Judge of the Mymensingh Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Shamsuddin Ahmed handed down the punishment.

The condemned convicts are Mozammel Haque Swapan Mia, 46, Apon Mia, 43, and Ripon Mia, 41-- three sons of Abu Bakar Siddique of Char Laxmidia in Nandail upazila of the district. Of them, Ripon was tried in absentia.

The lifers are Abu Bakar Siddique, 71, his son Kanchon Mia, 36, Rubel, 56, Pervez, 31, Mofazzal Hossain, 56, Kashid, 59, Al Amin, 31, Sumon Mia, 36, Noyon Mia, 29, and Ashadul, 29. Ashadul was tried in absentia.

The court also fined each of them Tk 50,000, in default to suffer one year of rigorous imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts had an enmity with Shafiqul Islam Sobi, son of Hazrat Ali of Char Bholamari area in Nandail upazila, over a piece of land.

On February 25, 2015, the convicts, equipped with local weapons, stabbed Shafiqul while he was sitting at a shop, leaving him dead on the spot.

Rafiqul Islam, brother of the deceased, filed a case with Nandail Police Station against 13 identified people and 10-12 unidentified people.

Later, police submitted chargesheet against 13 people.
