A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent expelled Jubo Dal leader Ferdous Ahmed Simon to jail after he completed a four-day remand in a case filed over an alleged attack and firing of blank shots in the capital’s Banglamotor area following an extortion demand.
After completing his four-day remand, Hatirjheel Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Nasim and also the investigating officer in the case, produced the accused before the court on Tuesday and sought an order to keep him in jail.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order following the prosecution’s plea.
Sub-Inspector Arif Reza of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
He said three other accused were sent to jail on Monday after completing three-day remands, while Simon was sent to jail on Tuesday after completing his four-day remand.
According to the prosecution, Simon provided important information during his remand, which investigators are now verifying. Police also said he could go into hiding if granted bail and that keeping him in custody was necessary for a proper investigation.
On October 2, the court granted different periods of remand for Simon and three others, Omar, 32, Morshed, 25, and Md Shawon, 25.
According to the case statement, the accused stopped complainant Md Sohan in front of a house in the New Eskaton area of Banglamotor under Hatirjheel Police Station around 7:15pm on October 1.
The complaint alleged that Simon demanded Tk50,000 from Sohan. When Sohan refused, Simon allegedly pulled out a pistol, pointed it at Sohan’s chest and attempted to fire.
Simon then allegedly struck Sohan on the head with the butt of the pistol, while the other accused also assaulted him.
The accused left the scene after local residents intervened, according to the complaint.
Sohan received initial treatment at a nearby pharmacy before heading for further medical care.
