Shariful Islam, an accused in a murder case, escaped from a Dhaka court for the second time on Tuesday. He had earlier been named in a case filed with Kotwali Police Station over his previous escape.
He was produced before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday in connection with that case when he slipped out of his handcuffs and fled the courtroom.
Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Prosecution Division, confirmed that Shariful “cunningly” escaped at around 12:30pm
He said police are reviewing CCTV footage, and an investigation will be conducted. A case will also be filed, while efforts are underway to arrest Shariful.
According to the police official, Shariful was brought from prison to court for a hearing in the Kotwali Police Station case. He managed to slip out of his handcuffs and escape from the courtroom.
Court sources said the case was scheduled for a hearing before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam. Constable Abdul Alim was assigned to guard Shariful.
Police said Shariful is from Dinajpur and his father’s name is Shafiq Ahmed. A murder case is pending against him with Khilgaon Police Station.
Shariful had been in jail in connection with the Khilgaon murder case. On June 19, 2025, he was brought to a Dhaka court from prison in the case, when he allegedly bit a police officer and escaped from the court premises.
Following the incident, police said the murder case had been filed with Khilgaon Police Station in 2018. Shariful was arrested in the case and had remained in prison for six years.
