Mitford murder case: Appellate Division stays Mohin’s bail

The Appellate Division’s Chamber Judge Court has stayed a High Court order granting six months’ bail to Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, the prime accused in the murder case over the killing of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Sohag, in front of Mitford Hospital in the capital.

A Chamber Judge Court, headed by Appellate Division Justice Md Rezaul Haque, passed the order on Sunday.

Earlier on September 28, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Syed Hasan Zubair granted Mohin six months’ bail along with a rule.

The state later filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking a stay on the High Court order.

Sohag was brutally beaten to death with stones by a group of people in broad daylight on a busy road in front of Mitford Hospital on July 9, 2025.

The following day, his sister Manjuara Begum filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station in the capital.

The case named 19 people as accused and included 15 to 20 unidentified individuals.

On July 12, the acting judge of Dhaka’s First Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court Mosaddeq Minhaj ordered the trial to begin against 21 accused in the case.
