Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal has urged journalists to objectively report any irregularities, misconduct or corruption in the judiciary, including the Supreme Court and the Attorney General’s Office.
He made the call while speaking as the chief guest at a programme marking the second founding anniversary of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum (SRF) on Tuesday.
Recalling his close ties with SRF members, Kazal said his long experience in journalism had given him an understanding of journalists’ professional challenges. He urged reporters to bring any irregularities or corruption in the judiciary to light through objective reporting.
He said media reports on various court-related issues had yielded positive results since he took office as attorney general.
Citing an example, Kazal said he had come across a case in which petitions on the same issue were filed before multiple High Court benches and orders were obtained. The matter was brought to the attention of the concerned court, which would issue further orders after reviewing the relevant documents, he said.
Describing the judiciary as the source of lawyers’ livelihoods, he said journalists have an important role in ensuring that the entire legal profession does not suffer because of the misconduct of a few individuals.
Kazal also urged the media to highlight positive developments in the judiciary alongside negative incidents. He said a large number of cases had recently been disposed of by both the Appellate Division and High Court under the Chief Justice’s initiatives, and such developments should also be brought to the public’s attention.
He called on all concerned to act responsibly so that the public does not receive misleading information about the courts.
“Accurate information should be presented to the people,” he said.
