Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam was sent to jail on Monday after a Dhaka court denied his bail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam’s suicide.
The order came after he completed two rounds of remand totaling eight days.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order following a hearing on Monday afternoon.
SI Rafiqul Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
After the end of the remand, case investigation officer Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Salahuddin of the DB Tejgaon Zonal Team sought an order to send Nazrul to jail.
Defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam sought bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court ordered Nazrul to be sent to jail.
Earlier, on September 20, police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, 19, from Flat 203 of NAM Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The door was locked from inside.
With assistance from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), police broke open the door and recovered her body hanging from a ceiling fan. Several notes were also found in the room.
The following day, Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case against Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, accusing them of abetting her suicide.
Police arrested Nazrul and Maksuda that night.
