A writ petition was filed with the relevant branch of the High Court on Monday challenging the legal authority of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to hold a press briefing about former adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain.
The petition also seeks directions to prevent the ACC from damaging a person's reputation through press briefings before an investigation is completed.
It seeks an order directing the ACC to admit its mistake regarding the press briefing on Asif Mahmud.
The petition further seeks directions for the ACC to refrain from disclosing information to the media or holding press briefings that could damage a person's social standing and reputation while allegations of corruption against the person are under investigation.
On September 2, the ACC announced that it would conduct an inquiry against Asif Mahmud and 3 others over alleged irregularities in appointments, transfers and promotions at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
At the time, a statement by an ACC official regarding the preliminary truth of allegations against Asif Mahmud sparked controversy.
Asif Mahmud subsequently demanded the withdrawal of the statement and sent a legal notice to the concerned ACC official.
The notice claimed that the ACC's statement, after being published in the media, had damaged Asif Mahmud's political, social and personal standing.
The ACC, meanwhile, said the inquiry against Asif Mahmud was not being conducted under political pressure or bias. It said the allegations were being verified in accordance with the law.
