A Dhaka court on Thursday placed former officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhaka Cantonment Police Station Md Rakibul Hasan on a five-day remand in a sedition case filed over allegations of spreading anti-state and provocative statements on social media..
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand petition filed by the case investigation officer.
Sub Inspector Tarequr Rahman of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
Cantonment Police Station Inspector ABM Abdullah Khaled Sakib, who is also the case investigation officer, sought a seven-day remand, arguing that Rakibul needed to be interrogated in custody.
Defence lawyer Morshed Hossain Shaheen opposed the remand and sought bail for his client.
The case follows the recent circulation of an audio clip purportedly featuring Rakibul, in which he was heard discussing the possible return of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
After the audio went viral on social media, the DMP formed a three-member committee to investigate the matter. Committee members later questioned Rakibul at the Detective Branch (DB) office.
He was subsequently shown arrested in the sedition case filed by Inspector Subrata Debnath of Cantonment Police Station.
